Order picking methods explained
Single-order, batch, zone or wave picking? The right method can double your output without any new hardware.
Single-order picking
One picker completes one order at a time. Simple and error-resistant, but slow when orders have few lines.
Batch picking
Several orders are picked together and sorted afterwards, often with put-to-light. Ideal for e-commerce with many small orders.
Zone and wave picking
Each picker is responsible for one zone or storage system, and orders are released in waves matching carrier pick-up times. Combined with automated storage this gives the highest throughput.
Slotting matters
Place fast movers (A items) in the most accessible positions and group items that are often ordered together. Good slotting alone can cut picking time by 20–30%.
